Pillow 80×40 cm – the Rectangular Comfort Pillow

Pillows measuring 80x40 cm are half the size of classic, large, square pillows. The advantage is obvious – or rather, under your shoulders: while you rest your head and shoulders on a conventional pillow, a pillow measuring 80×40 cm only supports your head and neck. Your shoulders can sink into the mattress. Pillows measuring 40×80 cm are therefore also referred to as comfort pillows

Narrow or Large Pillows: Which is Better?

It's not always the mattress that's to blame when you don't get a good night's sleep – it could also be the wrong pillow. On a large 80×80 cm pillow, your shoulders usually rest next to your head. This can lead to tension and restless sleep. In addition, large pillows are often unnecessarily puffed up, causing you to sink into them so that you can hear your own breathing when lying on your side. An 80x40 cm pillow gives your shoulders the space they need. This raises your head slightly, allowing your heavy shoulders to sink into the mattress unhindered and your cervical spine to remain in its natural position. This allows your neck, throat and shoulder muscles to relax and prevents tension. A special type of comfort pillow is the neck support pillow, which is specially shaped to provide targeted support for the neck.

The Pillow Filling for Good Support

Like the standard pillow, the 80x40 cm pillow is available with feather, down, synthetic fibre or foam filling. The right pillow filling is essential for good support. Pillows with polyester filling, such as visco foam, allow your head to sink in while providing support. Feather and down pillows (40×80 cm) offer less support than foam because feathers and down do not have the same stability. Animal fillings are simply a relic of the past, technically outdated and ethically disastrous. High-quality 80×40 cm pillows can be adjusted in height, allowing you to customise the level of support. Make sure that you can remove some of the pillow filling or that the pillow has different support heights, for example by having different heights on each side.

Ergonomic Sleeping with the 80x40 cm Pillow

High-quality pillows measuring 80x40 cm, such as the ergonomically shaped BODYGUARD® Visco pillow, relieve pressure on your neck and shoulder area when lying down and support the cervical spine. The filling of the BODYGUARD® Visco pillow consists of flexible visco foam flakes, which you can remove as desired to adjust the pillow to your body.

Measuring approx. 32 x 70 cm, the BODYGUARD® neck support pillow is slightly more manageable than the 80 x 40 cm pillow. However, with its curves, it still fits perfectly into an 80 x 40 cm pillowcase. With two sides of different heights, you can decide how much support you need in the neck area for your cervical spine, depending on your personal support requirements.

The Right Pillowcase for an 80x40 cm Pillow

The size of the pillowcase should roughly correspond to the size of the pillow filling and vice versa. If you choose an 80x40 cm pillow, a 40×80 cm pillowcase will fit. High-quality cotton is particularly well suited for pillowcases due to its many advantages: thanks to their smooth surface, satin pillowcases feel pleasantly cool against the skin on warm summer nights. On cold winter nights, you can snuggle up with cosy flannel pillowcases. Cotton products are breathable and regulate the sleeping climate. For people with allergies, polyester pillowcases are often more practical.

The narrower 80x40 cm pillow supports only your head and neck, while your shoulders sink into the mattress. With a large pillow measuring 80×80 cm, your head and shoulders sink into the pillow together, which can lead to tension and poor sleep. The 80x80 pillow is often more voluminous in height. When you sink into large pillows, your airways become blocked. This is not fatal, but it does disturb your sleep.

For so-called comfort pillows, such as the BODYGUARD® Visco pillow, the 80x40 cm pillow has become the standard. For some pillows, such as the BODYGUARD® neck support pillow, these dimensions vary slightly. However, not so much that an 80x40 cm pillowcase would not fit like a glove. The large, classic pillow measures 80×80 cm. Some people find the corresponding large 80x80 cm pillowcases for the 80x40 cm pillow cumbersome, as the excess fabric has to be folded over and can slip during the night.

Pillows should generally be filled with materials that allow your head to sink in while supporting your cervical spine. Down and feathers, which have been used as pillow fillings for centuries, date back to a time when people stuffed their pillows with materials from their immediate surroundings. Just as we no longer stuff our pillows with hay today, feather and down pillows are also technically obsolete. Nevertheless, many companies and customers continue to use them, perhaps for nostalgic reasons. However, it is not necessary to torture animals in order to produce a good pillow. Synthetic fillings have many advantages, not only ethically but also in terms of their function, such as in terms of care and durability.
