The basis of the bed: the slatted frame.

If you say A, you must also say B. Anyone who buys a bed must also buy slatted frames. The slatted frame supports and springs the mattress. Perfectly matched to each other, your body is optimally supported so that you enjoy the highest level of lying comfort. Thanks to its open design, the slatted frame also ensures that the mattress is well ventilated. The slatted frame therefore forms the basis of the bed.

What types of slatted frames are there?

Not all slatted frames are the same. There are different models, each suitable for different sleeping needs and mattress types. In general, there are three types of slatted frames: slatted frames with spring wood frames, plate slatted frames and roll-up slatted frames. Buying slatted frames is a challenge for many people. The following slatted frame comparison can help you to master it.

Buy slatted frames: Spring wood frame, the classic

The spring wood frame consists of a sturdy frame and elastic cross slats. High-quality types are made from solid wood such as beech. They have many individual slats, a maximum slat spacing of 2-3 cm and slat suspensions made of flexible rubber or caoutchouc, also known as spring caps. Ideally, these caps are positioned above the frame. Otherwise, if two slatted frames lie next to each other in a double bed, an unsprung central hollow is created. In some models, an additional middle belt increases the stability of the slats.

In some types, an additional middle belt increases the stability of the slats. The open construction of the sprung wooden frame ensures sufficient ventilation of the mattress. Mold growth is prevented and a pleasant bed climate is promoted. A slat width of 7-12 cm is ideal for ventilation and stability. Any mattress can be combined with the slatted wood frame. If you want to buy new slatted frames, you can hardly go wrong with a spring wood frame. It is available in fixed and adjustable variants.

Springwood slatted frame

Robust and solid. Your mattress rests evenly on the rigid slatted frame. It offers stability and can withstand heavy loads. The flaps in the spring caps react flexibly to the respective body zones and either give way or support their initial position. If you want a reliable base with no frills, this is a clear slatted frame recommendation.

Adjustable spring wood slatted frame

Like the fixed slatted frame, the adjustable slatted frame offers stability and optimum support, but when compared directly, it even performs better. The head and often also the foot section are height-adjustable. The upper and lower body can be adjusted to different positions depending on requirements and individual sleeping requirements. Buying adjustable slatted frames is particularly worthwhile if you like to read in bed, watch TV or simply want to put your feet up - or even higher.

By the way! If you prefer a firmer bed, pay attention to the number of slats when buying slatted frames. If the slatted frame consists of many slats, the spacing is inevitably smaller. And the smaller the distance, the firmer the lying sensation.

Selective support with adjustment sliders

Many models can also be adjusted to suit individual sleeping requirements. With the help of so-called adjustment sliders, you can adjust the firmness of the slatted frame in specific areas and thus support or relieve individual body regions. Regardless of whether you sleep on your back, stomach or side. Whether you are multi-weighted, broad-shouldered or large-breasted. Lumbar complaints or a slipped disc can also temporarily change your sleeping requirements from the ground up. Slatted frames with adjustable sliders are prepared for all eventualities and can provide you with the support you need in any position.

Buy slatted frames: Plate slatted frame, the complex one

Plate slatted frames consist of a wooden frame and many small plates made of plastic, rubber or metal. These plates are flexibly mounted and adapt individually to each part of the body. Depending on the particular area of concern, the plates can be adjusted to different degrees of firmness.

Each plate moves independently so that the slatted frame offers very precise support. However, due to their complexity, slatted frames are often expensive. They can never replace a good mattress.

Please note! As plate slatted frames offer a noticeably softer sleeping experience overall than conventional slatted frames, the firmness of the mattress should be given particular consideration. A medium-firm mattress can appear softer due to the slatted base, so a firmer mattress may be necessary.

Buy slatted frames: Roll-up frame, the simple one

The roll-up slatted frame consists of simple, parallel slats that can be rolled up. What is missing in a direct comparison with a conventional slatted frame is the stabilizing frame. The roll-up slatted frame is inexpensive, space-saving and easy to use. Its simplicity and flexibility make it ideal for temporary solutions or guest beds that can be assembled and disassembled as required. It does not offer any notable comfort or individual customization options. Despite its functionality, quality should not be compromised: Simple materials such as birch are often used in the lower price segment. However, solid wood such as beech is also better here, as it is more stable and robust than susceptible birch wood.

Buying slatted frames: Which wood is best for slatted frames?

Manufacturers often use birch. The light-colored, slightly yellowish wood is relatively flexible, light and easy to process. However, as birch wood is often used without impregnation - its surface only moderately absorbs liquids such as oil for protection - birch furniture is more susceptible to pests. In general, birch furniture is not necessarily made to last forever due to its lack of stability. Slatted bases for beds have to withstand a lot, but many are made of birch nonetheless. In this case, the low price is usually convincing.

If you want to buy robust, durable slatted frames, you should choose beech. Beech wood is considered stable, of high quality and has a natural red tinge. It is highly impregnable (class 1), so it absorbs impregnations well and therefore offers high resistance to pests. Due to its durability, beech wood is particularly popular in furniture construction. Beech wood is also the ideal material for slatted frames. It scores with high elasticity and stability at the same time.

Slatted frame sizes

There are numerous sizes in which you can buy our BODYGUARD® slatted frames. You can choose between the adjustable BODYGUARD® slatted frame and the BODYGUARD® rigid slatted frame.

Full-length slatted frames for beds wider than 140 cm may be less stable. If you are thinking of buying a 160 x 200 cm slatted frame, it is better to buy two 80 x 200 cm slatted frames. The same applies, for example, to a 180 x 200 cm slatted frame and a 200 x 200 cm slatted frame.

Which slatted frame is best for you depends on your individual sleeping needs, your mattress and any health problems you may have. If you want to buy new slatted frames, pay attention to the material first. A stable slatted frame should be made of beech wood and the slat caps should be made of flexible rubber instead of fragile plastic. A slat width of 7-12 cm is ideal for ventilation and stability. The slat spacing should not exceed 2-3 cm. If you need two slatted bases for your bed, the slats should ideally rest on top of the frame. Otherwise there will be an unsprung hollow between the slatted frames.

If you want to buy slatted frames, the following applies in terms of price: as little as possible, as much as necessary. Oak slatted frames are usually cheaper at around 50 euros, but are less stable. High-quality beech models are around 100-300 euros. High-quality slatted frames start at 300 euros and can cost over 1,000 euros depending on the model.

A good slatted frame made of beech wood should be able to support a weight of up to 100 kilos without any problems. This is in addition to the 20 kilos of an average weight mattress. Special slatted frames for beds that are exposed to heavy loads have an extra middle zone reinforcement. They are designed to offer overweight people even more support in the particularly stressed pelvic area. As a rule, however, such a slatted frame is not necessary, as a beech slatted frame is designed for far above-average loads.

It is not the slatted frame that ensures back-friendly lying comfort, but primarily the mattress. The slatted frame is secondary. As a stable foundation, it should support the mattress in its function. Therefore, first invest in a high-quality mattress that supports your back and relieves pressure in sensitive areas. You should also buy a slatted base to complement the mattress. It should have a high number of slats so that the distance between the slats is small. This is the only way for the slatted frame to achieve the necessary firmness. Adjustable models can also be adjusted depending on health problem zones or lying preferences. You can find out how to adjust your slatted frame to suit you here.

If you sleep on your side, you don't need to buy special slatted frames - they don't exist. The mattress should primarily provide the necessary support or relief for the sleeper. However, an adjustable slatted frame can be individually adapted to the sleeping requirements using adjustment sliders: special support for the waist, relief in the hip area, the shoulder area should also be softer.
