Fitted Sheet 180×200 cm:
For Queen-Size Beds and Box Spring Beds

The 180×200 cm fitted sheet is the most comfortable solution for covering a queen-size bed or box spring bed with the corresponding dimensions. Simple sheets without elastic have to be folded awkwardly under the mattress. In the morning, the sheet has often slipped out from under the mattress again, and the tugging and pushing starts all over again. You only need to pull the 180×200 cm fitted sheet over the mattress once, and if you use one with a good fit and an all-around elastic band, it will usually stay in place until the next time you change the sheets. No wonder, then, that fitted sheets have largely replaced classic bed sheets in Europe.

Fitted Sheets 180×200 cm: Which Bridge Height Is Best?

The length and width of the mattress determine the size of the sheet. The height of the mattress or the combined height of the topper and mattress is often overlooked when buying new fitted sheets. However, the so-called bridge height can be crucial: especially with high mattresses, not every 180x200 cm fitted sheet will fit over a 180x200 cm mattress. In this case, you need a 180x200 cm fitted sheet with more leeway in terms of height. The maximum leeway in height that a 180×200 cm fitted sheet allows is indicated by the bridge height. A bridge height of around 25 cm is standard and sufficient for most conventional mattresses. However, for very high mattresses, which are often used on box spring beds, a bridge height of 30, 35, 40, or even 45 cm may be necessary, especially in combination with a topper that may also be high.

Fitted Sheets 180×200 cm – Cotton, Linen, or Synthetic Fiber?

Most fitted sheets measuring 180×200 cm are made of cotton. Fitted sheets made of linen are less common in countries with a continental climate. Fitted sheets made exclusively from synthetic fibers such as microfiber are also rare, but almost every fitted sheet contains a small amount of synthetic fibers. The synthetic fibers are intended to improve elasticity. This is because a fitted sheet should not be as stiff as a conventional linen sheet. The fitted sheet must be able to be pulled over the mattress and stretch. Ideally, the sheet should then shrink back to the size of the mattress. An elastic fitted sheet measuring 180x200 cm ensures a good fit without slipping off or forming uncomfortable creases.

Whether flannel, jersey, or terry cloth—all these fabrics are made of cotton. The fabric is created by the type of thread and the weaving technique. Large-mesh cotton fabrics such as terry cloth insulate body heat better, while tighter-mesh fabrics feel cooler thanks to their smooth surface. The BODYGUARD® jersey fitted sheet 180×200 cm offers a good compromise in terms of warmth: cotton jersey is rather tightly woven and actually smooth, but it is slightly roughened to give it a fluffy feel against the skin. All cotton fabrics have the pleasant and familiar feel against the skin that you know from many items of clothing. Cotton absorbs moisture produced by night sweats well and quickly releases it back into the ambient air.

Linen Fitted Sheet 180×200 cm

Linen sheets were once so common that the term “linen sheet” is still used today to refer to all types of bed sheets. In large parts of Switzerland, people therefore tend to refer to fitted sheets as ‘fixleinen’ rather than “fitted sheets.” However, true linen sheets, whose fibers are obtained from the flax plant, are no longer very common. Linen fabrics feel rather rough to the touch, but score points for their high breathability – one reason why genuine linen sheets are particularly popular in hotter regions. But even here in Germany, you can find the right linen sheet, including a 180×200 fitted sheet made of linen.

Since the increasing popularity of microfiber fabrics, fitted sheets made of microfiber have also become more common. Microfiber fitted sheets are usually made of 100% polyester, which means they retain their shape and color even after many washes. However, some people find microfiber to be smooth and slippery to the touch. As a result, the 180×200 microfiber fitted sheet is not to everyone's liking.

What Is Elastane Doing in Fitted Sheets?

Blended fabrics, often simply referred to as “stretch” in the textile industry, made from cotton and the synthetic fiber elastane, for example, can be found in many modern fitted sheets. Elastane ensures high elasticity while maintaining shape. Elastane creates a margin of up to 20 cm. This means that your 180x200 cm fitted sheet will fit just as wrinkle-free and snugly on a 180x200 mattress as it will on a 200x200 cm mattress. Elastane ensures that the fitted sheet is neither too tight nor too loose.

Wash Fitted Sheets at 60°C

A good 180×200 cm fitted sheet should be able to withstand washing at 60°C despite its elastic band. This is because germs and dust mite allergens are only washed out at temperatures above 60°C. Therefore, make sure to check the washability of a fitted sheet before purchasing it. Even though bedding and sheets are in contact with your skin for hours every night, you will often find fitted sheets and covers in stores that can only be washed at 30 or 40 °C. This is often due to sensitive materials, dyes, or poor-quality elastic. Whether you have a dust mite allergy or not, all bedding should always be washable at 60°C—you shouldn't compromise on this.

In principle, you do not need a special fitted sheet for a box spring bed. However, if you have a particularly high mattress or even an extra topper on your box spring bed, you will need a fitted sheet with an extra high bridge height.

The size of the sheet always depends on the mattress or bed frame. So, a 180x200 cm mattress requires a 180x200 cm fitted sheet. If you don't know the size of your mattress or bed frame, simply measure it:

For the fitted sheet, you simply need the width and length of the mattress. If you use a topper or a high mattress, also measure the height of the mattress – including the topper, if applicable. Most conventional fitted sheets do not fit mattresses with a total height of 23 cm or more. In this case, you will need one with extra height.

Measuring a fitted sheet is indeed not easy, because the elastic prevents the fitted sheet from unfolding to its full size when it is not already attached to a mattress. One option would be to attach the fitted sheet to only one side of the mattress at the head and foot ends and then measure how far the corners on the other side can be pulled without creating too much tension.
