Buying a Duvet: What Should You Look For?

Filling Material: Down or Synthetic Fibre?
Down: An Outdated Classic
Down duvets are considered a classic choice. Down is lightweight and provides excellent insulation. However, it requires more care – some down duvets cannot be machine washed, while others quickly lose their loft. They are also unsuitable for people with house dust mite allergies. The exact origin of down is often difficult to trace, and regardless of farming conditions or certification labels, its production always involves animal suffering.
The Alternative: Synthetic Fibres
Modern synthetic fibre fillings are a high-performance alternative. They are easy to care for, machine washable and completely free from animal-derived materials. At the same time, they provide reliable insulation and help create a comfortable sleeping environment.

Find the Right Duvet Size
Choosing the right duvet size can make a real difference to your sleeping comfort. Depending on your height and whether you share your bed, different sizes may suit you best.
- 135×200 cm duvet: the standard size for a single duvet. Suitable for people up to around 180 cm tall.
- 155×220 cm duvet: a comfort size offering extra length and width. Suitable for people over 180 cm tall.
- 200×200 cm duvet: the classic king size duvet. Ideal for couples.
- 200×220 cm duvet: a king size duvet with extra length. Also ideal for couples.
As a general rule, your duvet should be at least 20 cm longer than your height, giving you enough room to move comfortably and snuggle up underneath.
Two Single Duvets or One Double Duvet?
Sharing one large duvet is the norm throughout the English-speaking world and much of Southern Europe. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, however, the majority of couples prefer two single duvets instead. While it may seem less romantic, it comes with some clear advantages:
- Each person can choose the duvet that suits their preferred warmth level.
- No more tug-of-war over the duvet during the night.
- Greater freedom of movement.
- More comfortable for side sleepers.
The best duvet filling depends on your individual needs. High-quality synthetic fillings offer an excellent balance of insulation, breathability and easy care. Duvets with a synthetic filling are also a great choice for people with allergies.
Shake out your duvet every day and air your bedroom regularly. Depending on how often it is used, washing it once or twice a year is usually sufficient. Always follow the care instructions on the label.
The higher the warmth level, the warmer the duvet will keep you. Warmth level 4 indicates a warm duvet with excellent insulating properties. It is ideal for winter and for people who tend to feel cold at night.
