Fitted Sheets 90×200 cm: For the Most Popular Mattress Size

Fitted sheets measuring 90×200 cm are the perfect fit for the most popular mattress size in Germany: the 90×200 cm mattress. Accordingly, 90x200 cm sheets are particularly common in single beds, but also in double beds with two mattresses.

What Is the Correct Height for Fitted Sheets?

If your 90x200 cm fitted sheet does not fit properly on the appropriate mattress size or constantly slips off, this may be due to the height being too small. The height of a fitted sheet refers to the height of the mattress edge that the sheet must enclose. The BODYGUARD® Anti Kartell Matratze®, for example, is 18.5 cm high and the BODYGUARD® Jersey Fitted Sheet has a depth of 30 cm. This gives the sheet enough space so that you can pull it not only over the sides of the mattress, but also under your mattress. A sufficient bridge height therefore ensures that the fitted sheet stays in place on the mattress.

Note: Most mattresses are between 20–25 cm high. A sheet with a height of about 30 cm will fit here. Box spring mattresses, waterbeds, or mattresses with a topper on top are usually slightly higher. Here you will need a sheet with a particularly high height.

Weight of Fitted Sheets: A Sign of Quality

One sign of a sheet's quality is its weight. Fitted sheets measuring 90×200 cm usually weigh between 120 and 170g/m2. The weight of fitted sheets varies depending on the material, weave density, and fabric. As a general rule, the heavier a fitted sheet is, the more robust it is. The BODYGUARD® jersey fitted sheet weighs 240 g/m² and is characterized by its soft feel against the skin, while also being durable and breathable.

Not All Elastic Bands Are the Same

Nowadays, most bed sheets you can buy are fitted sheets. Fitted sheets are sheets that have elastic around the edges. Sheets of this type were only introduced to the market in the late 1970s and became popular immediately. Previously, only flat sheets were common, which you had to tuck between the edge of the bed and the mattress. The high-quality workmanship of the elastic band is almost as important for the quality of a 90×200 cm fitted sheet as the fabric itself. Only a robust and elastic elastic band can provide good tension in the long term. There are different ways of attaching the elastic band. The simplest solution is to reinforce only the corners of the sheet with elastic. The fitted sheet fits better if the elastic band runs all the way around, as is the case with the BODYGUARD® jersey fitted sheet 90×200 cm, for example.

The Best Material for Your 90x200 cm Fitted Sheet?

What material should you choose for a 90x200 cm fitted sheet? In addition to cotton, which is still the most commonly used material for bed sheets, a number of newer materials have become popular, each with its own distinctive properties. You will notice these properties of a 90x200 cm fitted sheet particularly in summer and winter.

If you sweat easily at night, a sheet that quickly releases absorbed moisture back into the air is best for you. It is also important that the material is breathable and feels cool on the skin. In addition to jersey, other cotton fabrics such as seersucker or cotton satin offer these properties.

For people who are sensitive to the cold, fabrics that are breathable are ideal, as they ensure that the sheet retains body heat without promoting perspiration. Materials that are well suited for a winter-proof 90×200 cm fitted sheet include flannel, jersey, and beaver.

Fitted Sheets 90×200 cm: Cotton and Elastane in Combination

The right material plays an important role in the functionality and comfort of a 90×200 cm fitted sheet. Jersey, for example, is ideal. Many bed sheets are made from a very high percentage of this versatile cotton fabric. The rest is made up of elastane. This is a synthetic fiber that is essential for the elasticity and dimensional stability of fitted sheets. The combination of jersey and elastane is used for many fitted sheets. This blend offers you an optimal balance between easy care, breathability, and comfort.

Advantages of jersey fitted sheets at a glance:

  • Good heat and moisture regulation all year round
  • sVery comfortable against the skin
  • No ironing required
  • Easy to wash at 60°C

How Should I Wash My Fitted Sheet?

Depending on whether you shower in the morning or evening, whether you sleep naked or in pajamas, you should wash your fitted sheet more often. In principle, every fitted sheet should be washable at 60°C. Only at this washing temperature can you reliably eliminate germs and bacteria. There is a persistent myth that bed linen should be machine washed at 90°C to be hygienically clean. This is nonsense. Only a few types of bedding, such as undyed linen, can be washed at this temperature. The elastic on fitted sheets would not survive such high washing temperatures. In addition, a wash cycle at 60°C is sufficient to achieve a truly clean result.

For a 90x200 cm mattress, you need a 90x200 cm fitted sheet. These are usually also available in so-called “from-to” sizes. This means that if the fitted sheet has a sufficient amount of elastane and good elastic, you can also use a 90–100 x 200 cm fitted sheet. However, a good fitted sheet should not cover more than two adjacent mattress sizes so that it does not slip off or flap around.

When combining two 90×200 cm mattresses on a 180×200 cm double bed, use a 180×200 cm fitted sheet instead of two 90×200 cm fitted sheets. This will help to reduce the gap between the mattresses. Two 90×200 cm fitted sheets on a double bed can be useful if, for example, one person has to use a special sheet due to allergies. You can also cover the gap between the mattresses with a mattress topper. Please note that a mattress topper will change the required height of your fitted sheet.

Jersey fitted sheets are suitable for different temperatures. This is because the surface of the sheet feels pleasantly smooth in the warm season, but also offers a certain cozy factor in winter. In addition, the material is highly breathable, which means it absorbs moisture well but also evaporates it quickly.
