Fitted sheet 140×200 cm – the cover for a French bed

The fitted sheet 140×200 cm is used to cover one of the most popular mattress sizes in Germany. The so-called French bed offers comfortable space when you sleep on it alone and is also spacious enough for two people. Accordingly, there is a high demand for fitted sheets 140×200 cm.

Fitted Sheets or Classic Sheets?

Like all sheets, the 140×200 cm fitted sheet should feel pleasant against the skin and protect your mattress from dirt. You can quickly remove, change and wash a sheet – unlike a mattress. Unlike classic sheets, fitted sheets have the advantage that their corners are reinforced with elastic. This means that fitted sheets stay on the mattress throughout the night and do not slip.

What Makes a Good 140x200 Cm Fitted Sheet?

To ensure that fitted sheets lie flat and wrinkle-free, it is important that they fit the mattress well. A fitted sheet with an optimal fit and good elasticity usually fits two adjacent mattress sizes. A 140x200 cm fitted sheet is usually suitable for both a 140x200 cm mattress and a 160x200 cm mattress. To achieve this, the sheet needs to contain a certain amount of elastane so that it remains permanently stretchy, but also has enough elasticity to lie smoothly on the mattress.

The so-called bridge height is also important. If the bridge height is too low, the sheet will slip off the mattress or be difficult to pull on. The higher your mattress, the greater the bridge height of your fitted sheet should be. Therefore, even for average-height mattresses, make sure you choose a 140x200 cm fitted sheet with sufficient bridge height.

Challenges Fitted for Sophisticated Beds

Box spring mattresses and box spring beds are a real challenge for fitted sheets. Box spring beds usually have not only one – often higher – mattress, but also a topper on top of it. Depending on the type of box spring bed, you can cover only the topper, in which case a 140x200 cm fitted sheet with a low to normal bridge height is perfectly adequate. If you want to cover both the topper and the mattress, you should definitely look for a fitted sheet with extra height. A 140x200 cm fitted sheet with more height may also be necessary for waterbeds.

Rare, but feasible: if you use two height-adjustable slatted frames under the two sides of a 140x200 cm double bed, you will need two mattresses. You can either cover these with two sheets or use a special 140x200 cm split fitted sheet. These sheets have slits at the head and foot ends so that they connect the gap between the mattresses and allow you to adjust both sides of the bed differently.

What Material Should I Choose for a 140x200 cm Fitted Sheet?

Jersey is a weather-independent material that you can use in any season. The fabric is also robust, easy to care for, non-iron and easy to wash. Jersey feels pleasantly soft on the skin and allows sweat to evaporate quickly, even on hot nights. Fitted sheets measuring 140x200 for summer can be made of seersucker, microfibre, linen or satin. In winter, cosy fabrics such as beaver, terry cloth or flannel are more popular.

Feel, durability and washability are the key criteria you should consider when choosing materials for bed linen and fitted sheets. A washing temperature of 60°C is definitely appropriate for textiles such as clothing or bedding that come into close contact with your skin for hours at a time. Only at 60°C can germs and bacteria be reliably removed.

Fitted Sheets 140x200 Cm for Specific Health Conditions

If you are allergic to dust mites, you should wash your 140×200 cm fitted sheet every week at 60 °C. Depending on the severity of your allergy, you should also use encasings for your mattress and bedding. Most health insurance companies cover part or even all of the cost of these mite-proof protective covers. Microfibre products, for example, are suitable fitted sheets for this purpose. Microfibre fitted sheets 140x200 are made of synthetic fibres, which are less hospitable to arachnids.

Fitted sheets measuring 140×200 cm are also available in a waterproof version. This variant is an easy-care option for incontinence or for families with children who share a bed. One advantage of these fitted sheets is that they provide excellent protection for the mattress against moisture. However, a disadvantage is that they are less breathable. An incontinence pad under the 140x200 cm fitted sheet increases your sleeping comfort and protects your mattress.

The BODYGUARD incontinence pad lies loosely folded on the BODYGUARD mattress.

Quality Does Not Have to Be Expensive

There is a wide range of 140×200 cm fitted sheets available at various prices. We advise against purchasing very cheap products. Poorly manufactured fitted sheets can contribute to perspiration, are thinly woven and therefore less durable, and often cannot be washed at 60°C. The label on the fitted sheet indicates the extent to which it is machine washable. Good products such as the BODYGUARD® jersey fitted sheet 140×200 cm are available from around 30 Euro.

Fitted sheets should ideally be made from fabrics that are robust and stretchy on the one hand, yet soft and breathable on the other. The most popular material for fitted sheets is jersey blend fabric. It combines all these positive characteristics. The fabric is breathable, easy to care for and suitable for both warm and cold nights. It is important that all fabrics contain elastane so that the 140x200 cm fitted sheet has sufficient elasticity.

The size designation of the fitted sheet is adapted to the format of the matching mattress. A 140×200 fitted sheet fits a 140×200 mattress perfectly. Fitted sheets often cover several mattress sizes. Make sure that the specified difference does not exceed two mattress sizes. Caution is also advised with sheets that are advertised exclusively for one mattress size: the material may be too inflexible and no longer fit your mattress after washing.

The most popular mattress size in Germany is 90×200 cm. Accordingly, fitted sheets measuring 90x200 cm are also widely available – as are fitted sheets measuring 180x200 cm, as double beds often have two mattresses under one sheet.
