40×40 cm Cushions – Versatile Use

Whether on the sofa, bed or chair, in the bedroom, living room or kitchen: 40×40 cm cushions are primarily designed for comfort – yours and that of your guests. They help you relax, whether lying down or sitting up. Colour-coordinated with their surroundings, they also fulfil an aesthetic function as decorative cushions or 40×40 cm decorative pillows.

Seat Cushion 40x40 cm – Lets You Sit Comfortably

40×40 cm cushions are suitable for most chairs. The square cushion fits perfectly on almost all seats. Kitchen chairs or dining room chairs often do not have upholstery. The reason is simple: if something goes wrong while eating, you can simply wipe the chair clean. However, this is not comfortable in the long run. That is why seat cushions are often placed on dining chairs. The handy 40x40 cm cushions are easier to fit in the washing machine than an entire chair with upholstery. The seat cushion also provides comfort on garden chairs or on the balcony and can be quickly brought inside depending on the weather. Your 40x40 cm seat cushion needs two things above all else:

  1. comfortable padding – not too thin
  2. a removable cover – for easy washability
  3. a high-quality filling – for long-lasting durability

Sofa Cushions and Decorative Cushions 40×40 cm

Sofa cushions measuring 40×40 cm can be a little thicker than seat cushions. As cuddly cushions, their primary purpose is to make you as comfortable as possible. Sofa cushions provide support for your head, legs or arms while reading, watching films or taking a power nap. Strictly speaking, sofa cushions are also decorative cushions 40×40 cm. However, decorative cushions more accurately refer to cushions 40x40 cm that are draped in front of and between the pillows on a made bed. Not particularly useful, but ultimately a matter of taste. In terms of style and colour, you can match decorative cushions to your interior design style just like sofa cushions. When it comes to cushion covers for 40×40 cm cushions, there are no limits to the colours and embellishments available.

Pillow 40×40 cm vs. Ergonomic Pillow 40×80 cm

The standard size for pillows or sleeping pillows is 80×80 cm. At only a quarter of this size, a 40×40 cm pillow is relatively small for the head. Therefore, the 40x40 pillow is usually only used as a decorative pillow in the bedroom. On a conventional 80 x 80 cm pillow, your shoulders usually rest next to your head. However, your shoulders should actually sink into the mattress. A narrower neck pillow is ideal: a 40 × 80 cm pillow gives you twice as much space as a 40 × 40 cm pillow and ensures that your head stays on the pillow when you turn over. A 40 x 40 cm pillow is more likely to cause you to wake up to adjust the pillow after you have turned from your back to your side or back again.

Cushion Cover 40×40 cm

Ideally, the size of the cushion cover should roughly correspond to the size of the cushion filling and vice versa. For example, if the size of the cushion filling is specified as 40 x 40 cm, a 40 x 40 cm cushion cover will fit. Larger pillowcases are still the standard for bedding, despite the widespread use of various types of neck support pillows, which are usually the same length but half the width of an 80×80 cm pillow. You will find fewer pillowcases for these 40×80 cm pillows. Most people therefore fold the pillowcase over.

To neatly cover a 40×40 cm cushion with a conventional cover, you have to do quite a bit of folding. You will rarely find bed linen that fits your 40x40 cm cushion. Instead, look for covers for decorative cushions. Here you are sure to find the right cover for your 40x40 cushion in a variety of materials, colours, patterns and embellishments – whether you use it as a sofa cushion, decorative cushion, decorative pillow or seat cushion.

A seat cushion must first and foremost be comfortable. You should be able to sit comfortably on it. If you want to use your cushion outdoors, a waterproof cover is advantageous, or one made from a wipeable material. You can also put your favourite 40x40 cm cushion in a cushion cover that meets these requirements. Ideally, your cushion should be washable or have a removable and washable cover.

The standard size for pillows for sleeping or sleeping pillows in Germany is 80 x 80 cm. Meanwhile, due to the spread of neck pillows and support pillows, half the width, 40×80 cm, is also becoming popular. For seat cushions or chair cushions, 40 x 40 cm is the most common size. The same applies to sofa cushions or decorative cushions and ornamental cushions, although these are also often available in sizes 45 x 45 and 50 x 50 cm.

You can design your own custom cushion cover for your 40x40 cm cushion. You can even use a different colour or pattern for each side of the cushion. For a fabric panel 110 cm wide, a length of 45 cm is sufficient – this already takes into account the cushion curvature and seam allowance. For particularly thick cushions, you should allow for a little extra.
