Topper 160×200 cm for Double Beds
The topper found its way into beds with the Scandinavian box spring bed. In this sleeping system, also known as a Swedish bed, a topper forms the top layer. In standard double beds, the 160×200 cm topper provides a softer lying sensation and a continuous lying surface if you use two single mattresses. You can also use a topper to make a continuous mattress softer and higher.
From Pull-Out Couch to Guest Bed
Folding sofas and pull-out couches are both comfortable living room furniture and practical sleeping accommodations for guests. However, most sofa beds are very hard, and there is often a noticeable gap between the actual seat and the pull-out section. Since the seat and pull-out section together often create a lying surface of 160 x 200 cm, a 160×200 cm topper is ideal for bridging the annoying transition between the two sleeping sides and making the lying comfort in guest beds pleasantly soft. In addition, a 160x200 cm topper is easier to store than a guest mattress of the same size. Simply roll it up and store it behind the couch or, ideally, even in the bed box until the next visit.
A Topper Is Not a Cure-All
Most toppers work in one direction: they make the mattress softer. If you find your mattress too firm, a soft topper can offer a more comfortable lying sensation. Conversely, in exceptional cases, a firm topper material such as latex can compensate for a mattress that is too soft. However, only very few toppers can do this – normally, even a firm topper will make the lying sensation softer due to the additional sinkage.
Important: If your mattress is worn out and has a hollow, even the best topper cannot solve the problem. In this case, you should invest in a new mattress rather than a topper.
Influencing Comfort: Yes.
Influencing Ergonomics: No!
If you want to change the comfort of your mattress with a topper, make sure that this does not compromise ergonomics. A topper that is too firm can prevent important parts of the body, such as the shoulders or hips, from sinking in. A topper that is too soft may not provide adequate support in the lumbar region.
Tip: The BODYGUARD® Topper is designed to match the ergonomic modules of the BODYGUARD® Anti-Kartell-Matratze®. The ergonomic properties of the BODYGUARD® Mattress 160×200 cm are enhanced by the use of a matching topper 160×200 cm.
Topper is not the same as ...
Mattress Protector 160×200 cm
A 160×200 cm topper should not be confused with a 160×200 cm mattress protector. Although both may look similar at first glance, a 160×200 cm mattress protector does not improve the lying properties of the mattress, nor does it make it softer. The mattress protector 160×200 cm is only there to protect your mattress. Strictly speaking, a mattress protector 160×200 cm only protects the mattress cover. The mattress core itself will still wear out over time. Therefore, regardless of the protective measures you take, you should replace your mattress after ten years at the latest for hygienic reasons.
Mattress Pad 160×200 cm
A mattress pad measuring 160×200 cm is actually nothing more than a slightly thicker mattress protector measuring 160×200 cm. Although a mattress pad measuring 160×200 cm does not improve lying comfort, it can provide warmth in certain circumstances. People who feel the cold particularly can sleep warmer with a heat-insulating mattress pad 160×200 cm. However, you should make sure that the mattress pad 160×200 cm does not negatively affect the lying properties of your mattress.
The Ideal Material for Your Topper 160x200 cm
Comfort Foam Toppers
The name sounds promising, but unfortunately the workmanship usually doesn't live up to it. Although they are made of the same material as cold foam toppers, toppers made of polyurethane, PU foam, PUR foam, or comfort foam are less point-elastic due to the manufacturing process. They are usually characterized by a lower price. However, as they are often less durable, you will end up paying more if you have to replace your worn-out 160x200 cm comfort foam topper sooner.
Cold Foam Toppers
Cold foam toppers are made of polyurethane, just like comfort foam toppers. However, their production is considerably more complex. The result is a stable and durable foam. The material supports heat insulation, is breathable, and soft. Some toppers, such as the BODYGUARD® topper, are tailored to the lying needs of different body zones. Like the BODYGUARD® mattress, the BODYGUARD® topper 160×200 cm features ergonomic modules that yield in the right places while providing effective support elsewhere.
Memory Foam Topper
Memory foam gets its name from the fact that it adapts precisely to the contours of the body and remains in this position for some time. It has an impression memory and retains your contours in its foam for a certain period of time. The material, also known as visco foam, then needs some time to return to its original shape. Therefore, a 160x200 cm memory foam topper is not suitable for restless sleepers. At cool bedroom temperatures, the material stiffens further, becomes more difficult to shape, and harder.
Gel Foam Topper
Gel foam is a foam enriched with gel, which is usually very soft. Also known as gel toppers, these toppers have a memory effect similar to that of visco foam toppers. However, a 160x200 cm gel foam topper is not affected by the outside temperature. The 160x200 cm gel topper is therefore soft and malleable, no matter how cold or warm your bedroom is.
Latex Topper
Latex is a durable and stable material. Latex toppers are dimensionally stable, temperature-insensitive, and characterized by a firm lying sensation. Due to the dense material, air can circulate little to not at all. The low breathability of the 160x200 cm latex topper therefore makes it unsuitable for people who sweat easily. Sweat cannot evaporate easily and collects on the latex topper.
