Topper 90×200 cm
The Topper for Germany's Most Popular Mattress
If you like your 90×200 cm mattress but would prefer something a little softer, you can opt for a matching 90×200 cm topper. A good topper provides a softer sleeping surface and maintains the supportive properties of your mattress, provided the two are compatible.
Topper 90×200 cm: The Frontrunner for Single Beds
The 90×200 cm mattress is by far the most popular size. Not only is it the German standard for single beds, but it is also very popular in double beds when used in pairs. However, the 90×200 cm topper is mainly found on single beds. In a double bed, a continuous 180 x 200 cm topper can compensate for the annoying gap between two individual 90 x 200 cm mattresses. Nevertheless, the 90×200 cm topper is the most popular – Germany's favourite size also tops the list of toppers.
What Your 90x200 cm Mattress Topper Needs
Mattress toppers lie on top of the actual mattress like a kind of extra-thin mattress. The materials used are familiar from mattress production. The core is made of foam or latex and then covered with a cotton or synthetic fibre cover. To ensure that your 90x200 cm topper harmonises with your mattress, there are a few points to consider:
- If your mattress is divided into different support zones, it is advantageous if your topper also has or replicates this zoning.
- The topper should not be too thick – maximum 10 cm – otherwise the lying properties of the mattress will be covered up. It should not be too thin either: below three centimetres, it will be difficult to feel any effect.
- Elastic fastening loops at the corners of the topper hold it on your mattress and prevent it from slipping.
Topper 90×200 cm: Spoilt for Choice When it Comes to Materials
Toppers with cotton covers feel very soft against the skin and tend to be warmer. Toppers with covers made of synthetic fibres such as mesh or the HyBreeze® functional cover of the BODYGUARD® Topper are breathable and ensure an optimal sleeping climate. When it comes to the core of the topper, the different materials all have their advantages and disadvantages.
PU-Foam or Comfort Foam
All mattress foams are made from the same plastic: polyurethane. PU-, PUR- or comfort foam is a simple way of processing polyurethane. Toppers made from this material are usually quite inexpensive and, contrary to their name, you cannot expect much comfort from them.
Cold Foam Topper
Cold foam is also a polyurethane foam. However, it is more complex to manufacture than comfort foam. Cold foam is high-quality, durable and, thanks to its open-cell structure, has good climate properties – ideal for people who perspire a lot. Cold foam can be harder or softer; the BODYGUARD® topper uses an exceptionally soft cold foam. The division into different support zones, which matches the BODYGUARD® mattress, makes the BODYGUARD® topper the ideal addition for anyone who prefers a softer feel.
Memory Foam or Visco Topper
The visco foam used in the 90x200 cm visco topper, which gives it its name, is often touted as NASA foam. Although this foam was developed by the space agency NASA in the 1970s, the name memory foam describes the unique properties of this material much better: when you put pressure on the ‘memory foam’ of a visco topper, it leaves an impression that only gradually returns to its original shape. This effect provides pressure relief with the visco topper, but makes it difficult to turn over. Visco toppers also harden in cold temperatures.
Gel Foam Topper
The core of gel foam toppers consists of a mixture of gel and foam. They are often referred to simply as gel toppers 90x200 cm. However, toppers made purely of gel are very rare. Almost always, gel foam toppers are meant. It is difficult to make general statements about gel foam toppers, as their composition always varies. As a rule, 90x200 cm toppers made of gel foam are very soft and not temperature-sensitive. They also do not retain any temporary indentations. However, it is questionable whether the added gel noticeably improves the quality of the foam.
Latex Topper
Latex toppers are usually quite firm. The lying sensation is often described as slightly springy. Latex can last for many years, provided you care for it properly. Due to their density, latex toppers are not particularly breathable. If you tend to sweat, a warm 90x200 cm latex topper is not the right choice for you.
Bodyguard® Topper 90×200 cm – a Professional with Profile
The BODYGUARD® Topper 90×200 cm differs from a conventional topper in several ways. Like the BODYGUARD® mattress with its two levels of firmness – one on each side – you can also use the BODYGUARD® Topper on both sides. One side of the cover is made from the breathable HyBreeze® functional cover familiar from the BODYGUARD® mattress, while the other is made from cosy BaumwollSleep®. The profiling of the entire topper creates an even softer lying sensation. If you also have a BODYGUARD® mattress, you can be sure that the BODYGUARD® topper is perfectly matched to it.
