Slatted frame, slat base, slatted frame or spring frame - the 140×200 cm slatted frame has a number of names. Depending on the design, there are also special terms such as spring wood frame, disc slatted frame or roll-up frame. Regardless of the name, all models have one function in common: a slatted frame should stabilise the body during sleep and ensure that the mattress is ventilated. What makes a good slatted frame? Why is a 140×200 cm slatted frame already the widest standard size?

Fun fact: One of the most popular mistakes in German is the incorrect use of the article for slatted frame: it is the slatted frame and never the slatted frame. The same applies to the grating for barbecues and the grate, which threatens to eat away metal grates if not cared for properly.

Slatted frames are available to match the corresponding mattress size: from the narrowest 70x200 cm slatted frame to the widest 140×200 cm slatted frame. If you have a mattress that is wider, you will need two smaller slatted frames. From a 160×200 cm mattress, a continuous slatted frame would be too unstable. What's more, a particularly wide slatted frame will only spring in the centre. In a double bed with two mattress bases, neither person would benefit from the slat base. There are therefore hardly any sizes wider than the 140×200 cm slatted frame.

Requirements for the suspension

The maximum width of the 140×200 cm slatted frame already poses a small challenge for the spring system. With a wooden slatted frame, the right spring slats are crucial. In this case, the slatted frame should really be ‘carved from the right wood’: Beech wood. The slats have to work much harder between the bars in a 140×200 cm slatted frame than in narrower slatted frame sizes. Beech wood is ideal. It is extremely stable and flexible at the same time. It also reliably supports heavy bodies and can accommodate individual lying requirements. The spring slats are fundamental to the suspension. Do they rest on the slats or are they clamped into the frame? Only sprung slats that rest on the frame will spring across the entire width of your bed.

Slatted Frame 140x200 Cm: Adjustable or Basic?

The adjustment options for slatted frames can be roughly divided into four levels, from rigid to disc slatted. Which slatted frame you choose depends solely on your preferences and needs. As a rule, a rigid slatted frame is sufficient for an average, healthy body.

1. The Basic Slatted Frame

The non-adjustable slatted frame has the advantage that it does not affect the ergonomics of a good mattress in any direction. You cannot make any incorrect adjustments here. Most non-adjustable slatted frames are simple wooden roll-up frames or rigid metal frames. You should also make some quality demands on the rigid slatted frame 140x200 cm. For example, high-quality materials such as beech wood or optimum slat spacing to ensure the durability of your mattress and provide a seamless lying experience.

2. Slatted Frame Adjustable in Firmness

With these slatted frames, you can usually adjust some slats in the back, shoulder and lumbar region to be firmer or softer. However, you should make sure that you adjust the slatted frame correctly and do not adjust it against your needs.

3. Slatted Frame Adjustable in Height

Movable head and foot sections allow you to raise entire sections up to a certain angle. Depending on the model, adjustment can be manual or motorised. Slatted frames in clinics and for the care of people with special physical needs sometimes have even more adjustment options.

4. Disc Slatted Frame

A disc slatted frame consists of numerous disc elements that can usually be moved in all directions. This is intended to achieve a particularly high degree of customisation to specific body shapes. The settings are often unnecessarily complex and the chance of making a setting that is unsuitable for you increases with the number of options. Ideally, a mattress with outstanding lying properties already does the work of providing ideal support for different body shapes. The support effect of a slatted base is often less and the lying sensation is softer.

This depends on your individual preferences and needs. A simple, rigid slatted frame is sufficient for a healthy body of average build.

If you prefer a little more comfort or are anticipating possible physical changes such as muscle growth or pregnancy, an adjustable slatted frame with firmness adjustment is the best choice. An adjustable head and foot section is a real benefit for evenings or even whole days spent comfortably reading and watching TV in bed. However, this additional function also pays off in the event of prolonged illness, such as the flu.

The 140x200 cm slatted base is a real hybrid. As a single bed, it offers you enough space and comfort to really stretch out. In a double bed, it ensures cosy closeness.
