Topper 120×200 cm – Mattress Topper for Large Single Beds

The 120x200 cm topper adds a softer level of firmness to your mattress. Beds with 120×200 cm mattresses are rare in German bedrooms. However, this bed size is underestimated. It offers plenty of space for people who sleep alone, while the bed itself does not appear too large, even in small rooms. And even for nights spent with a partner, the mattress with the 120×200 cm topper is sometimes large enough. If you want to top your bed with a 120x200 cm topper, the material and workmanship are crucial. If you have a box spring bed, you should check whether you really need an additional topper before buying one.

Topper on Top

Box spring beds essentially consist of three components: a spring core box, also known as an under-mattress, an upper mattress, and a topper. The topper is a thin mattress-like overlay. It is placed on top of the mattress. While American box spring beds have the topper integrated into the upper mattress, Scandinavian box spring beds consist of an upper mattress with a separate mattress overlay. The advantage is that you can easily replace the comfort overlay to adjust the lying comfort to your needs. This saves money compared to replacing the entire upper mattress of a box spring bed.

Additional Topper on Box Spring Beds

The 120×200 cm topper forms the top layer of a box spring bed and ensures a soft lying sensation. The mattress underneath provides support. Good mattresses can do both: provide a soft lying surface and ergonomic support. That's why you don't usually need an additional topper on a normal bed with a slatted frame and mattress.

Topper 120×200 cm for Fine Adjustment of the Degree of Firmness

If the bed is too hard or too soft, but your budget is too small for a new mattress, a 120×200 cm topper can change the degree of firmness. However, adding hard or soft lying properties to a mattress topper is only possible to a limited extent. Even with a good 120×200 cm topper, the lying comfort can only be made softer or firmer to a limited extent. If the 120×200 cm topper is not as high-quality as your mattress, it can even worsen the lying comfort.

No Topper for Old Mattresses

If the sleeping characteristics of your mattress have deteriorated over the years, this is a sign of normal wear and tear. If there is also a hollow in the mattress, you need a new one. A 120x200 cm topper will not help you revive your worn-out mattress.

Topper on the Outside, Foam on the Inside

Toppers are similar in structure to mattresses: a core enclosed in a cover fabric. Various materials are available for manufacturing the topper core, such as latex, visco, gel, or cold foam. Mattress toppers meet different requirements depending on the material and manufacturing process. Nowadays, 120×200 cm toppers are no longer used exclusively for box spring beds. You will also find them on other bed systems consisting of a slatted frame and mattress. The choice of material influences the firmness, elasticity, and breathability.

Comfort Foam Toppers

Comfort foam toppers have a fancy name that promises a little too much. These toppers, made from simple PU foam (polyurethane foam), are usually poorly manufactured and do not last very long, as they become permanently deformed over time.

Cold Foam Toppers

Cold foam is also a type of PU foam, but it is processed to a higher standard than comfort foam toppers. Cold foam toppers are stable and durable and are characterized by good breathability. Depending on its composition, cold foam can be very firm to very soft. This means that there is an extremely wide range of cold foam toppers available.

Visco Foam Toppers

Mattress toppers made of viscoelastic foam, also known as memory foam, are soft and point-elastic. Toppers with a visco foam core retain heat and react slowly to changes in position. If the room temperature is cool, the visco foam topper feels firmer. It only slowly softens with body heat. If you move around a lot in your sleep, viscoelastic foam toppers are not ideal, as you first have to turn yourself out of the hollow created by the memory effect and can also “slide back” into it.

Gel FoamToppers

Gel foam toppers are made of foam mixed with gel. Thanks to this mixture, they have high point elasticity and a low memory effect. Gel foam toppers feel soft to lie on, similar to visco foam toppers. However, their firmness does not depend on temperature. Gel foam has a high heat-insulating effect, which is a disadvantage if you prefer to sleep in a cool bed.

Latex-Toppers

Latex is point-elastic and dimensionally stable. It does not have a memory effect like visco foam. Latex does not absorb moisture itself, so artificial cavities ensure sufficient ventilation. Nevertheless, latex toppers have low breathability. If you tend to sweat, you will not be satisfied with a latex topper. Some people are allergic to latex without knowing it. Therefore, check your tolerance before purchasing.

The BODYGUARD® Mattress Topper 120×200 cm: the Soft Comfort Overlay

Many people associate sleeping comfort with a soft lying sensation. With the BODYGUARD® Mattress Topper, you can add a soft version to the BODYGUARD® Mattress, which already has two degrees of firmness. The ergonomic modules of the BODYGUARD® mattress 120x200 cm are carried over to the BODYGUARD® Mattress Topper 120x200 cm to match the lying properties. An ideal combination for soft sleeping comfort. High-quality cold foam provides the appropriate pressure relief. The BODYGUARD® Mattress Topper has different covers on both sides: on one side you have the high-quality HyBreeze® Cover and on the other side cozy BaumwollSleep®.

A topper should be neither too thick nor too thin. It should be high enough that you can sink in comfortably without compromising the support provided by the mattress. A height of 4 to 7 cm is ideal.

A good mattress topper should have a few basic features. It should be made of high-quality material that changes how you feel when lying down, whether you want it softer or firmer. The material should be durable and breathable. A certain degree of washability also extends its durability. Retaining straps ensure that it stays exactly where you place it on the mattress.

If your bed is too hard for you in the long run or your comfort needs change over time, 120×200 cm mattress toppers offer an easy way to adjust your sleeping comfort. If it's just about how comfortable you feel when lying down, a 120×200 cm mattress topper can be an inexpensive alternative to buying a new mattress.
